I recently bought an expensive piece jewellery ( a lds rolex watch) from Philip Zetler jewellers.The problem was, we were 1500km's apart, and I needed the piece within two days!

Considering pre-owned?

Buying a pre-owned watch is a popular option for consumers looking to purchase top brand watches. Prestigious brands like Rolex, Breitling, Cartier, Tag Heuer, IWC, Jaeger le Coutre and Patek Philippe always keep their value and in mint condition a purchaser can save up to 25% on retail. For example,a pre-owned Rolex 18ct Datona Cosmograph will sell at R120,000 instead of R180,000.Still, many consumers are hesitant when it comes to spending so much money on jewellery with no knowledge of it's history-and so they should be.
Phillip Zetler Jewellers (PZJ), situated in Cape Town, is one of the few retailers in SA that offer this service to clients. He stresses that consumers should always deal with the agent or a reliable dealer when buying a pre-owned watch. "The original box and papers or authenticity certificates are essential. Look for the model and serial numbers which are stamped at the top and bottom arms where the lugs are situated and check the dial for water damage.”
PZJ have been trading in pre-owned watches for 20 years, and considers Rolex their most popular brand, as well as older, more sought after watches and collector's pieces ie.Breitling,Cartier,IWC, Patek Philippe,Omega etc.
With the limited number of credited jewellers trading in pre-owned locally,purchasers are turning to the internet.
Nandlal Govan, owner of Watch Market, a website selling and buying top brand watches,considers that it is much like the second hand car market “We always ask for certification from the seller”. he insists. With so many counterfeit watches on the market and the possibility of fake certificates, all watches placed on their website are checked for authenticity by approved watch houses and their SA agents.
Through experience, Zetler says that most men are not big jewellery buyers and find great comfort and value in owning a top brand pre-owned watch. Women to a lesser extent, but some are just as keen as men.
